Lymphedema is caused by a malfunction of the lymphatic system resulting in excess swelling which can be found in any area of the body. This condition can be congenital, the result of lymph node removal or lymphatic damage following cancer treatment. It can also be caused by a secondary condition such as Chronic Venous Insufficiency, traumatic injuries, chronic inflammatory conditions, or surgical procedures.
Lymphedema, whether inherited or acquired, is treated with Complete Decongestive Therapy which includes manual lymph drainage, compression, exercise, and skin care. At RCR we use the Vodder technique which requires advanced training and a unique understanding of the body systems.
One of the side effects of cosmetic surgery is swelling. This is a normal inflammatory response and a part of the healing process. Body procedures, particularly tummy tucks and liposuction, often cause additional swelling.
Lymphatic massage helps to move the excess fluid and allows waste to be flushed from the body. This prevents fibrosis, which is the development of thick, fibrous scar tissue under the skin as well as reduces swelling and bruising. Lymphatic Massage leads to 50% quicker post op recovery, decreased post op pain, and improved overall appearance.
Manual lymph drainage following surgeries improves pain, increases range of motion, and accelerates the healing process by removing excess fluid and waste from the surgical site and through out the body. Treatment includes the management of scar tissue which can hinder the lymphatic system's ability to filter fluid from the surgical area. This can lead to chronic swelling and tissue fibrosis, decreased range of motion and pain. Procedures which benefit from lymphatic drainage include knee and hip replacements, and abdominal surgeries.
CVI is the result of inefficient blood flow in your veins. The veins are responsible for returning blood and fluid back to the heart. If the valves in your veins are malfunctioning, fluid and blood leaks into the surrounding tissues. This can cause staining and swelling in your legs. If this condition worsens leg ulcers can form and fluid can leak from the skin. Lymphatic treatment includes manual lymph drainage, compression, exercise, and skin care to address, improve, and manage the effects of CVI.
Lipedema is a chronic condition marked by the abnormal accumulation of fatty tissue most commonly in the legs or arms. Lipedema can be painful with increased tissue sensitivity in affected areas. Dieting and weight loss is not always effective. Lipedema is closely related to lymphedema as the accumulation of fat cells in the tissues can lead to inadequate lymphatic drainage causing swelling the affected areas. Lipedema is managed with manual lymphatic drainage, compression, exercise, and skin care.
Lymphatic massage works to detoxify your system and improve immunity. The gentle, rhythmic manual technique can help relieve anxiety, pain, and nervous system imbalances. Your lymphatic system is key to healing, regenerating tissues, and removing toxins from the body. When the body has experienced stress, such as fighting off illness or post viral symptoms, healing from an infection or emotional stress, the lymphatic system can slow down. Manual lymphatic massage works to reestablish a healthy balance, improve energy, and recalibrate the system.
